Rolli Oden

Born and raised in southern California in orange grove country, I grew up wending my way on my bicycle from here to there using the paths through the groves. As I grew older I navigated streets and my world became larger. My father was an amateur photographer and my brothers and I had Brownie box cameras as soon as we understood how to use them. My interest grew and my high school graduation present was an Alpa 35 mm camera. A 9d I think. I went to college to major in journalism but along the way photography came and went. So did my majors but eventually it was bichemistry and then medical school. In the late 90s and early 2000s I experimented a lot with alternative processes such as gum arabic printing and my cameras moved from 35mm to medium format and large format. I enjoyed several years of traveling and visited China, a few countries in Africa, and Cuba. Recently, I moved from film to digital and the photographs displayed here were all taken with digital cameras. Now I live in Colorado and am exploring new people, places, and things. I’m thrilled with this new adventure.

Why ant works photography?

About 30 years ago I went on a vision quest with a friend who held sweat lodges. Throughout that time period, ants kept appearing in the most unlikely places. In a room there would only be a single ant and it would be walking towards me; or appear on my clothing; and one time on a ceremonial pipe. That sealed the deal. Ants are creatures I really respect: they work together for the common good; they only use the resources they need; they build intricate habitats; they help each other out. What’s not to like?
